Who is Frank Looby?
Frank Looby, born in 1951, grew up in Philadelphia, lived in Berkeley and NYC in the early '70's. 11 years of night school to get an Engineering Degree. Now lives in the Philadelphia suburbs and is a contractor working in the Delaware Valley and is married with a teenage daughter. Musical influences are the usual for someone his age (Stones, Kinks, Airplane, Who). Frank says that he honestly can't say what his songs sound like, other than "Stones meets Kinks meets Airplane meets the Who". Someone once told him that he sings like Lou Reed, but he says he's not sure how much of a compliment that is. Musically, he feels that he's right out of 1969-1972.
He recorded and mixed the CD himself at his home and had it mastered by Landrock Recording. As Frank says, I double mic my amp (close and room), then I switched guitars and amps and double mic again so I have 4 tracks of rhythm guitar to play with (different EQ, reverb, chorus, etc.). Then overlay the solo (again double mic'ed). I find this gives me a nice "thick" sound. I did all the guitars plus bass, keys, and drums.
Conceptually, the CD is based on Frank's idea that there are conservatives out there who like rock, who like the idea of those "I Love America" country songs but are turned off by that country/twangy thing. People who like rock but who are too old for songs about: chicks, getting high, my parents/girlfriend doesn't love/understand me, kinda stuff. So once he decided to do the CD, he approached the project like a series of esssays or newspaper articles, (meaning that would be the topics of the songs). He came up with general themes that he could translate well into a rock format such as: killin' terrorists, Hillary Clinton, lovin' the flag, useless isiots (Lenins' phrase, he can't take credit for it), and generally pro-America, pro-Military stuff.
